Ottawa: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today released a new petition calling on the province not to give new taxing powers to other municipalities in Ontario like it did to Toronto through the City of Toronto Act.
The petition reads:
To Premier Dalton McGuinty and Minister Watson:
On January 1st, 2007 the "Stronger City of Toronto Act", which grants the city new taxing powers, came into force. So far, the City of Toronto has imposed three new taxes; a garbage tax, a vehicle registration tax, and a land transfer tax. And still the city is considering more new taxes, including; a liquor tax, road toll, a billboard tax, and a sidewalk tax.
During the recent provincial election you promised not to raise the taxes of Ontarians. Giving to other Ontario municipalities new taxing powers like those given to the City of Toronto would be tantamount to raising taxes.
We the undersigned taxpayers, call on the government of Ontario not to give new taxing powers to Ontario municipalities.
The petition was released in Ottawa, the locations of the ridings for both the Premier and the Minister of Municipal Affairs.
